Letter from the President: February 23, 2021

Fellow Members,

With the cancellation of the Mobile Meeting, the new Virtual Meetings Committee has organized a two-part “Mobile Replacement Meeting” as promised. I’m sure you are by now, accomplished ZOOM users and will enjoy the April gathering. We have added a social aspect to the program as a new idea. Alan Boyd will be hosting the two segments and you will see an official ZOOM link invitation in the near future. Mark your calendars as this will be an enjoyable gathering with some enticing presentations. A concise synopsis of the planned activities for both segments follows:

Friday April 23rd (7pm EST)
ASAC Business Meeting (Members only, no guests) with a normal but shorter agenda. It is very important you attend this meeting as we have Society business to attend to, including the inductions of two new members and a vote on two new Board of Directors nominations.
Immediately following the Business Meeting there will be a Social Hour with spouses invited. This is a new twist and should be fun.

Then the following day are the presentations.
Saturday April 24th (12pm EST)
Featuring 5 Presentations (w/ guests if desired) covering some great topics.

Paul R. Johnson – “Brigade Surgeon Bentley’s Presentation Cased Pond Revolver” Michael Helms – “From Gun Maker to Fraudster: the Life of Lucius Pond”
Jeff Ross – “Development of the basket hilted sword during the 16th and 17th centuries” Joel Bohy – “Guns, Ball and Ball Strikes: Understanding the firearms of April 19, 1775” Lynn Wood – “Hardin: The Texas Pistoleer”

The Virtual Meeting Committee has also been coordinating additional gatherings via ZOOM over the next coming months. To date there have several of these including such topics as Scottish Weapons, US Martial Pistols and Early Arms of Great Britain and Ireland. Please let Frank Martin know if you are interested in creating a Collectors Meeting such as these in your area of expertise.

The good news is we are hearing that COVID vaccines are slowly rolling out to Members. As always, stay well and be safe. We look forward to “virtually” seeing you soon in April.

Matt
